Muscle Memory is cool. Our brains are cool. I think it is awesome that if we do something enough times, our brains will do it automatically. Like walking, talking, playing an instrument. Learning a sport. Driving. (Okay so this one is not in my muscle memory very well maybe. 😉 ).
This is all so awesome, that we can learn and do and grow.
This is also true of our thought life.
Sometimes, things happen so many times in our life that we create beliefs, neuro pathways. Grooves in our brain that we automatically go to when they are triggered.
For me, my default is aggression, isolation and anger . This happens when I feel rejected, or the threat of rejection , or hopelessness.
If these things , these behaviors and responses are ingrained in us, when can we change them, or stop them?
At any time we want.
Seriously. We can make a different choice in the way we respond at anytime in our lives. Anytime we realize that our own ways of responding are not helpful. We can make a choice to change our responses.
It is by no means easy. It took you your whole life up to this point to find the coping skills you have. SO, it will take time to redirect and re route new behaviors. It’s a blog on habits. But the point is , it is doable for sure. But it requires an open mind, to different possibilities and ways of thinking.
The question is, Are you ready ?
You can do it. It seems, feels, impossible. But it is not.
