For the better part of my childhood, I sought wisdom, I sought guidance from people. I suppose its been engrained in me, and a way of living for me: the desire to understand an glean from those around me. Today’s Daily Stoic meditation had this topic:
Take a good hard look at people’s ruling principle, especially of the wise, what they run away from and what they seek out. – Marcus Aurelius
I have pretty well been the person who observes the scene around me and watches people. I like to be the second or third person to complete a task so that I can watch how other people do it before I go. I am a visual learner. The same has been with my spiritual life and just personal growth in general. It is helpful for me to talk things out, to keep myself aware and accountable. To see which places I am on track, and which places need questioning or looking at.
There is wisdom in seeking out other people as mentors and helpers, but we must be careful to keep watch of our motives.
What happens when we have a perspective shift, and our principles no longer line up with those we seek wisdom from?
I have learned that we are in a continual place of learning and growing and that is okay. There doesn’t have to be a massive break down every time you have a breakthrough .
Seek and watch how people live there lives, and if they are doing something you want to learn more about, or possess a quality you want to better within yourself, visit with them. Learn what brought them to where they are. Get to know them and their why, but remember this: You must know your why. Know why you are seeking this out.
The goal is not to become the people you are seeking guidance, relationship, or connection with. The goal is to become the best version of you.
Be encouraged,
Rachael
Amen.
